Jaguar S-Type Battery Drain
Posted: Thursday 31 July 2008
I have a S-Type 2002 (facelift) 2.5 V6 sport manual. When I bought the car (recently) the battery was dead and had to be jump started. The car was serviced and the battery changed (Bosch), after receiving the car back and running around for the weekend the car was left for 5 days, the car would then not start (totally dead) and had to be jump started again.
The car has gone back to the garage (Jag specialist), they have detected a battery drain of approx 750 milli-amps (0.75a), checked after shutdown 45+ mins, normal discharge should be aprox 20-40 milli-amps (0.04a), they have informed me that they have checked out all usual suspects OK, interior lights, ALL fuses (circuit isolation method), door switches, phone, alarm, etc etc. They have told me that the alarm does self arm which they find strange.
They are struggling to find root cause of the drain, they think it could possibly be a problem with RECM, GECM, ECU. However today they have told me they have a customer's car in for service, same specification as mine (apart from Auto) and have swapped RECM, it still drains so they have eliminated this as cause, they are going to swap GECM tomorrow to see its causing the drain.
Help!.........Any ideas how to diagnose the cause?, as i do not wish to fund changing expensive modules unnecessarily. The garage mechanics are ex Jag dealer technicians so i don't know where to go and am getting desperate especially if they can't find the cause. The car has now been with them 10 days.

The only thing I can put my finger on is that the boot light maybe sticking on because the micro switch may be damaged this will then drain the battery within days also causing the alarm to activate because of the dip in power, if you feel the bulb you will be able to tell if this is the problem.
If this is not the cause give David Stewart a call at Preston Jaguar Centre, 01995 640909, he's a good guy who can probaly help further.
X-Type Ambient Air Sensor - Non-Stop Buzzing
Posted: Wednesday 5 September 2007
Hi, maybe you can help.
I just bought a certified 2004 X-Type. The fan of the ambient air sensor continues to run (you can hear it buzzing!) well after the key is out and the car is closed. I waited for more than 10 minutes after I got out of the car and it didn't stop. Is this normal?
The mechanic first replaced the fan and now (the noise is still there) he says the buzz is normal.
I'm afraid that if I leave the car for one month when I leave for Europe it will drain the battery.
My friend has a 2002 and a 2007 X-Type and they dont make this buzz.
If you look on the dash just to the left of the steering column you'll see a small section with a few vents in (only an inch or so across). It's tiny a fan which carries on running in humid conditions to circulate the air so you don't get blasted by warm air when you use your climate control. It circulates air across the humidity sensor. It keeps running for a while after you switch off, and starts again when you open a door. It does this so that there is less delay in getting the climate control to the right setting when you switch on (or restart) all perfectly normal, and nothing to worry about.
Series 2 E-Type Coupe Oil Pressure Problem
Posted: Sunday 31 December 2006
I am a new member of 5the JEC. (Nov.05) and I live in Clapham, Yorkshire, and I think that your section is perhaps my closest. I am in need of some advice; first of all I will outline problem, I have a Series 2 E-Type coupe, which I bought in October, and with no problems and have driven a few times this winter. On a trip back home from the Midlands along the M6, last weekend, I was doing around 75-80mph. for a couple of minutes, when I noticed that the oil pressure gauge, which had been reading around 45psi. was gradually reducing and went down to 20psi. I reduced my speed immediately, and fortunately wasn't too far from the Charnock Richard Service Station, so I pulled in. On opening the bonnet there didn't appear to be overheating, although the header tank overflowed a little, and there appeared to be a slight spray of oil on the underside of the bonnet, (I think that this came from the breather tube, rubber cap with clip fastener at the front and top of the engine. I called the A.A., but the officer couldn't find very much wrong and advised me not to drive it further, so I was returned home by low loader.
I was able to speak to my local garage man who asked me to drive it over steadily, so that they could have a look at it. I started the car which on starting, had a good oil pressure of nearly 60psi. On warming up for a few minutes it went down to regular running pressure of just around 40-45psi, so I set off for the garage at Low Benrtham, a distance of about five miles. At around half way there, the oil pressure started to drop again to around 20psi. On arrival at the garage, again the mechanic said that he could not diagnose anything wrong. He admitted that he knew virtually nothing about E-Types, and advised me to seek specialist advice. On Friday evening I telephoned the Club Technical Adviser, Colin Ford, we had a chat, and he suggested that the problem might be with the gauge itself, and advised me to try to get a wet gauge to test the pressure. Not being very mechanical, and not possessing the necessary equipment, I am seeking your advice as to a possible recommendation of a Jaguar E-Type mechanic / specialist in our part of the world, who is knowledgeable, reliable and straight. Do you have a list of such people, if so I would be grateful if you are able to let me have the information, or a contact that may be able to advise me.
Hello Walter. Pleased to hear from you, with reference your problem with dropping oil pressure. My E-Type used to do the same thing also the Daimler XJ6 coupe. The problem can be one of two things if there is nothing else wrong with the engine. No 1 if you have an electric oil pressure clock this could be faulty, as they usually are, the way I used to get round this problem was to go to the scrap yard and take the oil switch off the oil filter on a Mini plus the manual clock and pipe it up to the car, this gives a more accurate reading. If you do this you can change the electric clock in the car or leave the manual cock under the bonnet and check it this way. The other fault was the oil pressure valve inside the oil filter. To change this you remove the oil filter and you will see a large bolt undo this and you can check if the spring on the valve inside has weakened, if so they are not very expensive to replace. Jaguar garages near you are Preston Jag Centre on the A6 at Brock near Preston and for spares John Gordon at Accrington. I hope this has been of some help to you.
1983 Jaguar XJS HE Parts
Posted: Sunday 31 December 2006
I have resently bought a 1983 Jaguar XJS HE. The engine has had £8,700 spent on it in the past two years. In fact the car has only done 75,000 miles and in the past two years it has only clocked up 29 miles. The body work is ok except for the doors and sills. Can you help me and tell me if anybody makes parts for this car.

Buying An XK8
Posted: Sunday 31 December 2006
Hi my name is Kevin I am looking to buy an XK8 convertible. First time buyer a little scary all this. Any help will be gratfully accepted.
Hi Kevin, when looking to buy a XK8 make sure that you buy a car from the year 2000 onwards, if you buy a pre 2000 check that it has had it's engine replaced as they tend to throw their pistons, don't let a dealer say that it will be alright!! Check out the Jaguar Enthusiast magazine for anybody selling theirs before buying the first one you see.
